About the data
The AgencyAnalytics 2026 Marketing Agency Benchmarks Report surveyed 494 agency professionals between February and April 2026. Most respondents were based in the United States (64%), with 8% in the UK, so treat it as a broad industry signal rather than a UK-only picture.
Relationships are still the top retention factor
80% of agency leaders said strong relationships are the top factor in client retention, with effective communication second at 69%. Campaign performance (39%) and transparent reporting (32%) followed. The report notes that strong relationships have been the number one answer each time the question has been asked.
Why clients leave
Budget cuts and economic pressure were the most common reason for churn (42%), followed by client-side internal changes such as leadership turnover or restructuring (37%), a lack of perceived value over time (32%) and performance not meeting expectations (31%). Misaligned expectations at onboarding were cited by 24%.
Several of these are things good account management can influence: showing value consistently, spotting a new stakeholder early and setting clear expectations from the start.
Clients want the conversation, not just the report
35% of clients now prefer to receive results through one-to-one meetings or calls, tied with static reports as the top format. The most common question clients ask, heard regularly by 55% of agencies, is whether the agency can clearly connect marketing performance to revenue.
What this means day to day
- Protect the regular conversation. A scheduled call where results are explained and next steps agreed is worth more than a report sent without context.
- Watch for change on the client side. A new marketing director or a restructure is a retention risk. Introduce yourself early and re-confirm objectives.
- Keep value visible. Tie updates back to the outcomes the client cares about, not just activity.
- Do not let capacity gaps show. Slow replies during leave or busy periods are often where relationships start to wear.
